Education

The Council curates educational material across the breadth of transfusion safety. Public summaries are available below; full case discussions, recorded sessions, and downloadable templates are available to members.

Hemovigilance fundamentals

Recognition, classification, and reporting of acute and delayed transfusion reactions, including TRALI, TACO, FNHTRs, allergic reactions, and hemolytic events.

Patient blood management

Pre-operative anemia optimization, restrictive transfusion thresholds, antifibrinolytics, and cell salvage — reducing unnecessary exposure while improving outcomes.

Blood component therapy

Indications, dosing, and monitoring for red cells, platelets, plasma, cryoprecipitate, and special products (irradiated, washed, CMV-safe, HLA-matched).

Massive transfusion

Activation criteria, ratio-based resuscitation, viscoelastic-guided protocols, and post-MTP debrief frameworks.

Specimen integrity & WBIT prevention

Wrong-blood-in-tube prevention, electronic positive patient identification, and second-sample policies for first-time crossmatches.

Quality systems & regulatory

AABB Standards alignment, FDA biologic deviation reporting, root-cause analysis, and CAPA program design for transfusion services.
